Abuelita’s Sopapillas

2   cups- all purpose flour

1   tablespoon baking powder

1   tablespoon shortening or lard

1/2 teaspoon salt

2/3 cup warm water

oil for frying

cinnamon sugar or honey

In a medium bowl, add flour, stir in baking powder and salt. Blend in shortening between fingers then add water gradually, stirring with a fork. Dough will be slightly sticky. Place into a floured surface and knead into a smooth ball. Divide dough in half. Let stand up to 10 minutes. Roll each half into a 12×10 inch shape, circle or triangle…be creative. Cut into 2-3 inch squares or triangles. Fry  3 to 4 at a time in hot oil. Drain on paper towel. Serve with cinnamon sugar or honey ~ powered sugar, ice cream, or whipped cream ….optional
